Presentation abstract
Turkey is one of transitory points for refugees due to its geographical position. In other words, given that a host of countries around Turkey have long been having domestic wars, human rights violations and populations with considerably low living standards lead to passage of millions of persons to Turkey each year. In last few years, Turkey has faced its biggest migration in last one hundred years. This has caused significant demographic changes. In other words, the distributions of ethnic, racial socio-economic, religious and language groups have been altered by the recent waves of refugees. Although various authors have mentioned the importance a multicultural perspective in education, there have been considerably small numbers of studies investigating multicultural competencies of teachers or candidate teachers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to measure candidate teachers’ attitudes toward multicultural education and investigate the relationship between their attitudes and a set of demographic variables. It is intended to contribute to emergence of research in the area of multicultural education in Turkey as well as having implications for teachers’ education with respect to the diversifying population of the country. For this survey study 184 voluntary students attending to Faculty of Education in Turkey were recruited. Results showed candidate teachers’ scores on MES, did not differ significantly according to the following independent variables: gender, field of study, their fathers’ level of education and place of longest residence. However, significant differences were observed with respect to the type of high school attended and mothers’ level of education.
