Social media occupy a very important place within our lives in today’s world. Many people from different age groups and education levels use social media to meet their various needs. In the current study, the purpose is to determine how pre-service social studies teachers’ use of social media affects their education and interpersonal relationships. The study group of the current research consists of 60 pre-service teachers studying at a state university in Turkey in 2015-2016 academic year. The study employed the descriptive survey model, one of the qualitative research methods. In order to collect the data of the study, a standardized interview form was developed by seeking the opinions of two experts. The collected data were independently analyzed by the researcher and a field expert and then they were evaluated together. Nearly three-quarters of the pre-service teachers stated that they use more than one social media account. On the other hand, there are some participants not having any social media accounts. The findings of the study showed that in social media, mostly personal photographs, political opinions and up-to-date developments are shared. It was also stated that social media have some negative effects on interpersonal relationships. Social media distance people from face-to-face interaction and make them asocial. Moreover, due the sharing in social media, some people’s relationships with their friends and relative deteriorate. The participants stated that they are disturbed most by sharing about political parties. For encouraging the effective and beneficial use of social media and protecting people particularly adolescents and children from the adverse effects of social media, continues efforts should be invested to raise individuals’ awareness and necessary precautions should be taken in time.
