Presentation abstract

The Prepa Tec Multicultural Program (PTM) aim is to empower students to explore cultural identity to participate in local community and the world. It’s curriculum includes different multicultural competencies as the framework for bringing students from limited knowledge, ability and actions to powerful engagement with the world. And before thinking in forming global citizens we have to start creating knowledge and acceptance of our own culture. The central idea of the subject “Communication and Art” (third semester) is “the proud of being mexican” so we (Spanish Department) decided to live the national multiculturalism not just researching about the architecture, painting, literature, traditions , folklore, gastronomy of an specific state of our country, but through a real interaction between students of our campus and the campus in an other city and we chose San Luis Potosi (SLP). Students had different on line activities in teams and then we organized a road trip in order to develop in our students a broader view of our cultural diversity of our country. The idea was that Monterrey students will stay with a “guess student” of SLP and live as a member of the family for 3 days, attending one day classes in SLP campus and during the weekend visit the city, its museums, attend a local concert etc. A group of 30 students visited them in September 2015 and now April 2016, 25 students from SLP visited us. This has been the first time we live a national exchange at High School. This is a Learning-Teaching strategy that encourages cross-cultural projects between professors and students from different campuses throughout the country, generating intercultural competencies. Students developed awareness of deep cultural knowledge such as concepts of family, history, traditions, games, music. And created a sense of belonging and nationalism.
