Presentation abstract
This study was designed to determine the role of the educational guidance/counsellors in curbing girl-child drop out in Nigerian Schools in Nigerian Schools. The study adopted descriptive research survey design due to the nature of problem investigated and was guided by three (3) research questions. Forty (40) respondents comprising of eight (8) lecturers in three higher institutions within the southeast states of Nigeria, six (26) Guidance and Counsellors in secondary schools selected for the study and twenty six (6) graduate students in the field of guidance and counselling were used for the study. The instrument used was questionnaire, which was subjected to test of internal consistency using Cronbach Alpha approach. Test-retest was carried out to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. Total scores were computed and analyzed to get correlation coefficient (r). A reliability coefficient of 0.67 was obtained hence, the instrument was termed reliable. Also, books, journals, and the internet were also used as sources for data collection and findings. Various information obtained were crosschecked with independent sources for fair assessment and authenticity. Where traces of bias or prejudice were found such data were discarded. In the case of oral interviews, conscious efforts were made to distinguish facts from personal opinions. This necessitated in-depth analysis and information obtained was analyzed qualitatively to arrive at the synthesis presented. Data obtained were analyzed in a descriptive form using mean and percentage. Findings among others revealed that there are high rates of girl-child drop out in Nigerian schools. Solutions for curbing the drop out in Nigerian schools were provided in the study by the experts in Guidance/ Counselling. The study concluded by making recommendations based on the results found.
