Presentation abstract

This presentations key purpose is to show how one faculty member has helped several universities to rethink some of the HRD and HRM course offerings in terms of creating a new way of displaying both academic and career development potential of their graduate students in terms of applying their course work to a career development portfolio to be used for potential career development opportunities. The instructor reviewed several Human Resource Development (HRD) courses and their learning objectives to determine what would be potential learning activities in which the students could not only gain academic credit, but also use the learning activities as possible applications for their own career and professional development. It was determined that the best learning vehicle would be an e-Learning Portfolio adapted to each HRD course. Two specific courses were re-designed to include the format of a e-Learning Portfolio to contain elements of course work specific to each course, but to be included on the student’s own web page creation. For many students, the creation of a web page was a unique and first-time event for them, and it helped them to gain more self-confidence with technology as they created the foundation for each portfolio in their webpage. Then they learned how to create links to add on various assignments for each class to be later evaluated by the instructor. The instructor worked as the facilitator for these major project, and incorporated lectures on career development and explained how they could download their portfolios to a USB stick to carry with them to future interviews to show the interviewer various artifacts of their graduate-level learning. The two final end products for these two key HRD courses was a training program and development of the student’s own consulting practice marketing materials.
