International male students living in the U.S. often experience loneliness and isolation.  Unfortunately, the kind of male-to-male friendships international students enjoyed in their own country will most likely not be possible with American males due to the American Male Deficit Model which says American males have buddies with whom they perform activities but do not have the kind of male friendships extant in many countries. Unfortunately, many male international students make the erroneous assumption that they are the cause of the social disconnect. This can cause male students to lose self-confidence and grow discontent;  they can fall into a depression which adverselyy impacts their academic performance. The Male Social Deficit Model  explains that American males sacrifice close friendships throughout their lives in order to be more successful at work, in the acquisition of a suitable mate, and in competitive sports and activities. American males, as a rule, do not sit in coffee shops and discuss politics or personal problems. The causes of this American male cultural trait and its impact on the academic performance of male international students are discussed; further, techniques for establishing relationships with American males are presented in an interactive presentation complete with handouts for attendees to take away from the session.
