Presentation abstract
Data Analytics is new business language for companies to survive in this fierce market competition and new academic discipline integrating mathematics/statistics, and computer science/IT. It is new opportunity to understand how people make decisions and to predict what they will make decisions in the future. What the industry needs are individuals who can develop insight from data within the context of business issues, deploy data for effective business solutions, and input into strategic decisions. For meeting industry's expectation and demands, we attempt to develop a fantastic data analytics program in business school. We spent a fair amount of time talking a lot of folks in the industry and looking at a lot of different programs (e.g., more than 30 programs) that exists in this field. Our program consists of 30 credits for three semesters. In the first semester, students will take foundational courses, such as fundamentals of statistics, information systems for managers, and spreadsheet modeling for decision making. They will take common core courses, including database, data analysis, and data visualization in the second semester. In the last semester, students will take 3 elective courses based on their pursuing careers; for example, healthcare or cybersecurity. During summer, students will take a 3-credit capstone course which will be doing projects collaborating with companies as a field study. Curriculum includes programming, quantitative methods, and analytics skills. We believe that data analytics will produce new generation of professionals who have a deep understanding of data analytics and highly rigorous technical and quantitative skills.
