Presentation abstract
Cross-culture studies have provided clear evidence that context plays a crucial role in play interactions. The types of play in which children engage differ according to economic, social and cultural contexts. At present, there is a body of literature that investigate children's play interactions both in formal settings, such as schools, child care centers and in informal settings, such as home and playgrounds. Few studies have examined how cultural beliefs and practices may have an impact on sibling play interactions in informal contexts among African American, Latino and Asian families. for many children, siblings are the first peers with which they have a relationship. Sibling interactions serve as natural laboratory for children to develop different skills. This is particular true for African American families and Latino because cultural practices within these famlies foster both sibling interactions and caregiving types of relationships. When older siblings are responsible for the care of the younger children they are likely to engage in play interactions. At it was stated before cultural beliefs, values and practices impact the ways children play with each other in informal contexts. Because variability exists across cultural groups, and within cultural groups, it is vital to explore sibling play interactions across cultural groups. The purpose of this paper is to examine sibling play interactions in informal contexts such as; home, neighborhoods and playgrounds. Specifically, this paper will: review the literature on sibling interactions and play interactions across different cultures, examine how cultural beliefs and practices have an impact on sibling play interactions, and examine informal child care practices embedded in sibling play interactions.
