Presentation abstract

Food security is vital for human survival. Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture has the constitutional responsibility to ensure that the country maintain high volumes of food stuffs in storage in case of food insecurity. This study examined the factors contributing to food insecurity in Southern Ghana. A qualitative research approach applying the exploratory design was used to explore the experiences of farmers. Data were collected by conducting unstructured interviews. Data were analysed thematically. The results indicated that inadequate irrigation facilities and insufficient extension officers contribute to food insecurity in Southern Ghana. In addition, it has also been noted that climate change has negatively impacted on agricultural activities.  There is, therefore, the need for intervention programmes to support farmers to ensure food security.
