Presentation abstract

In the era of transnationalism and migration, the immigrants often experience a nostalgic urge to preserve their cultural roots. They feel insure about blatant assimilation of their kids (second generation immigrants) to the Western culture and the loss of identity that follows. In their attempt of preserve their culture and to shield the children from the “corrupt” influences of Western society, Indian immigrants often send their children to renowned boarding schools in India. Thus, in the context of boarding schools in India we witness a clash of civilizations, where East encounters the foreign born kids. This research therefore explores the reasons behind sending of children to boarding schools in India; adjustment process of NRI (Non Resident Indians) kids in boarding schools of India; the hurdles, if any, children encounter; the process of inculcation of Indian values in children; and finally evaluates the effectiveness of schools in imbibing Indian values and culture in the children. This qualitative research was based on interviews conducted on students, teachers, school administrations, parents (NRI) and other stakeholders involved.
