Presentation abstract
Zambia is an English speaking country. The official language is English. But following the Addis Ababa agreement on the teaching of foreign languages, French was introduced in our Zambian schools as a foreign language. In some schools French is offered as an option subject. The traditional way of learning French in Zambia with French names of people, food, towns and so on, became very difficult to our Zambian learners to appreciate the subject. A good number of our learners dropped this subject (French) because it became difficult for them to understand it. Therefore, the Zambia Association of Teachers of French tried to contextualize or localize the teaching/learning of French with local names of people, food, towns and so on. This paper looks at how the contextualization of learning French made it easy to our learners to understand French as a foreign language and appreciate it.
