Presentation abstract
The aim of this paper is to explain how informal learning occurs while creating a YouTube beauty vlog on the basis of constructionism. Vlog is the tutorial videos that are usually recorded by the YouTube user by their own camera with simple editing (Frobenius, 2014). Previous studies on YouTube for learning (e.g. Clifton, 2011; Duffy, 2008; Tan, 2013) concern more on the vlog as the resources for learning than for the learning happened while producing the vlog. The vlog in this case study is the beauty vlog in which the participant creating a daily make-up tutorial. The theoretical framework for this case study is constructionism. This theory was chosen due to its ability on explaining the process of learning while creating the individual shareable product. In this case, the beauty vlog created by the participant will be the shareable product. This empirical research is a case study. The data were collected through an observation and a semi-structured interview. The data then being analysed and interpreted using the framework of constructionism in three stages; think, make, improve. The result suggested that there are several outcomes for this informal learning. The outcomes are in term of motivation on learning more about make-up and English, new knowledge on starting YouTube channel, the evaluation based on the shared comment on YouTube and the creative ideas for the next project. The overall finding in this study shown that the participant informal learning on starting YouTube channel and make-up is more effective when he dived into creating his own YouTube vlog, not only observed it.
