Presentation abstract
In junior high school of Taiwan, the technology course of 7 grade is designed to prepare the abilities for science research in 8 and 9 grades. For this aim, the abilities of hands-on and using technology are necessary to construct for science learning and experiment research. An hands-on curriculum is combined with different disciplines, such as science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (called as STEAM). This STEAM curriculum is designed from a team, which is cooperated based on teachers of junior high school and vocational high school. The two major projects are “mixture of colored light by LED” and “3D card with color-light projection”. The literacies are formulated by science teacher of junior high school, manufactured by teachers of vocational high school, and practiced in all levels schools via teachers of team. Students utilize their engineering skills to assemble the electronic device, and using the device to learn and inquiry the science theory. Then, students can modulate the device to various colored light for understanding the concept of mixture of colored light, and to achieve the purpose of effective teaching. The electronic device also is using to art production, which production is based on the calculation of mathematics. In order to design the 3D card, students need to utilize the space concept for calculating the lengths of the piecewise on the card. Using the structure to vary the projection of light, the light and shadow on the 3D card can be presented as an art production. In this STEAM curriculum, students will learn to use the abilities of skills, which are based on technology and engineering, for making the device. Then, they will utilize the device to learn the physice theory and create the art production via calculation of mathematics.
