Presentation abstract
Social media features provide a great number of opportunities for interaction and information seeking. Combined with many social changes that left an impact on family size, organization and quality of interaction between family members, they opened a space for a new type of collaboration considering the most intimate and most precious family issues. In compliance with that, contemporary parents are simultaneously under-connected with close family members and friends and hyper-connected with many unfamiliar people via Social Media. Intimate issues such as those concerning parenting styles and upbringing problems are being discussed online, in parental groups consisted of parents with similar problems and experiences who have never met offline. The problem that arises from the practice mentioned above is a lack of pedagogical expertise in advice given by random people, mostly based on their own subjective experience and spread by a group support that makes it valuable and trustworthy even in the occasions when it is obviously scientifically unsustainable and unsupported by experts. We are interested in finding out the parents’ attitudes on using Social media (Facebook parental groups) as an information source on parenting and as a support system in the process. Therefore, we will apply an online questionnaire on various dimensions of information and support seeking. The results will be discussed from the social and andragogical perspective.
