Presentation abstract
This study aims to investigate factors influencing the motivation and demotivation in learning Korean as a foreign language and to explore the remotivation of university students in Singapore. The 158 motivated students and 104 demotivated students participated in the surveys and their responses were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The results revealed that the major motivating factors were the travel orientation and the cultural interest, and the major demotivating factors were the evaluation factor and the language factor. Through the responses to an open-ended question on the demotivation, it was found that the competition factor was another demotivating factor. In addition, the competition factor and the language factor showed differences between the first level and the second level and above, due to the fact that the unfair competition exists in the first level, and the difficulty of language increases as the level goes up. Based on these findings, the researcher suggested remotivating Korean learners by promoting the motivating factors and weakening the demotivating factors.
