Presentation abstract

How many times have you wondered, “Why does my student act that way or do that?” Understanding that behavior is communication is key when it comes to supporting students. Being aware that everyone has “first hour needs” will often assist in setting the tone for the day. Looking at behavior through the lens of the behavior cycle (rumble, rage and recovery) offers insight in ways to provide supports so students do not have to use behaviors, especially in negative and/or inappropriate ways, to get their needs met. Prevention is the best intervention. This session will provide positive strategies to prevent the behavior as well as offer ways to help students gain skills to self-regulate / identify their frustrations before they get to the point of having a meltdown.
