Presentation abstract
“The best thing parents could ever do for their kids is being and educating emotionally intellingent human beings.” Goleman (2014) Emotional Intelligence is the hability to identify and translate correctly our emotional signs and the ones from others, in order to develope thinking, behavioural and emotional processes according to our personal goals and to our enviroment. (Salovey, Wooler & Mayer, 2001) Emotional Intelligence is needed more and more everyday, and the younger the kids learn about it, the better. Not educating in emotions is a very antique idea, given the fact that the more we learn about the brain, the more it´s proven that emotions are, in fact, what determines the hability to reason and learn. Today, the millennial generation lives in a culture based on pleasure, on the instantaneous; so coping strategies and frustration tolerance are being forgotten more and more every single day. This is why it is so important to make awarness in parents and teachers in charge of this kids of educating in emotions. Throughout history we´ve been told that intelligence is the result of having good grades at school, of being great at science and math; but fortunately this has changed. According to Goleman (1995) the IQ seems to bring only 20% of the factors of success, so the other 80% depends on different kind of factors, being emotional intelligence the most important of them. If we want smart kids not only in knowledge but also in habilities and attitudes; if we want a true education for life, emotional intelligence is the key. In a time where the inmmidiate, utilitarianism and hedonism reign society, arises the need of an antidote that reminds us what being human beings truely means. That antidote is emotional intelligence.
