Presentation abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the role that the creation of a fictional book may play in developing students’ intercultural and communicative competence within foreign language contexts. The present case study, conducted among 26 first-year students of secondary education enrolled in a high school in Avila (Spain), describes a didactic innovation designed to contribute to successful second language learning as well as to develop intercultural communicative skills. Data were collected through questionnaires, tasks, and classroom observation. Findings suggest that the production of the fictional novel has had a positive impact on students’ learning since it helped to stimulate students’ creativity, improve their English language skills, and enhance their motivation for learning English, as they gradually became more cross-culturally competent.
