Presentation abstract

This proposal presents the implementation of a technology that has become the key to the development of modern Engineering worldwide: Immersive Virtual Reality, state-of-the-art technology that will be of conventional use in the short term. This activity was carried out in 2018 with students of 5 careers of the Faculty of Architecture and Engineering of the Central University of Chile, with a total of 119 participating students and 49 direct users of the Virtual Reality system called "Oculus Rift Touch". The implementation of this technology was developed based on an activity previously defined by the Academics, the intervened courses were "Computational graphic design" - which is common for the careers previously indicated - and "Building I" that is carried out for the careers in Construction Engineering and Civil Engineering in Civil Works. In both cases a project was revised via printed planimetry and in Immersive Virtual Reality, to then conduct a series of surveys that allowed to determine the accuracy and perception of the students. The main results of the experience were related to the fact that the larger the project, the greater the incidence in the recognition of its geometric characteristics will have the Immersive Virtual Reality. The margin of error in the recognition of the geometric characteristics with Virtual Reality in the large-scale project was 1.8% (Project 3) versus 16.6% (Projects 1 and 2 of smaller size), in addition the average precision between the digital and analog model has a comparative accuracy of 9.2% and 11.8% respectively, so in all cases the Virtual Reality delivered more accurate results in the understanding of a three-dimensional model. Students' opinion shows that virtual reality is a technology known by new generations and that they establish a great potential when it is incorporated into the Academy.
