Presentation abstract

This paper analyses two Colombian news organisations connected to the realm of Slow Journalism, an area that confronts the fast pace imposed by the digital world. The cultural magazine Arcadia and the political information media La Silla Vacía work on their content in depth, slowly, while they also pursue and experiment with formulas that guarantee the sustainability and independence of their projects. These two news media use a wide range of digital and non-digital tools and techniques that, in the case of Arcadia, combine with the printed edition of the magazine. Arcadia was created in 2005 as a cultural supplement of the Semana magazine and La Silla Vacía is a digital native project initiated in 2009. The search of slow content has led them to create original digital narratives that have captured the interest of younger audiences. Their solid use of social media also illustrates this fresh and innovative approach: they have 125,000 and 1,200,000 followers in Twitter, and 169,000 and 232,000, respectively, in Facebook.  Furthermore, through this strategic use of social media, Arcadia and La Silla Vacía have attracted new funding sources to overcome the usual dependence on traditional advertising. Thus, this paper argues that Slow Journalism relates to a way of approaching, contextualizing and telling stories, rather than a one-size-fits-all set of tools. This study is part of a wider research project led by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) that investigates in depth ten digital slow media in Spanish language.
