Presentation abstract
Post-truth has been defined as rhetoric where the logos of an argument has been replaced with a distortion of ethos and pathos as defined by Aristotle. In the absence of logos, post-truth is empowered by mythos, the core stories cultures tell themselves to form their identities and validate their existence. One such story encoded in the post-truth rhetoric popularized by Donald Trump, reinforces the line of argument promoted by "eco-capitalism," an approach to the international environmental crisis that capitalism is the solution to the problem of climate change. According to this narrative, while capitalism may have caused the current environmental crisis, the same motivating forces that drive capitalism can be turned toward creating a sustainable future without sacrificing the market-based economy that capitalism has built. The problem with this approach is that it is built upon the crumbling foundation of post-truth rhetoric, which is based in the capitalist mythos and requires that the facts of climate science be ignored. An alternative model is provided by eco-socialism, which proposes that the only way to avert climate disaster is via a complete restructuring of society which requires the dismantling of peak oil culture, investment in infrastructure redesign and the reorientation of society around local sourcing of food, energy, housing, and goods as opposed to global sourcing of these resources. Though this approach acknowledges the facts of climate science, it has its own post-truth mythos built into its assumptions. In order to become reality, the capitalist myth of unending innovation and opportunity must be unraveled, and with it the view of the importance of the individual over the culture at large. This requires not only an unprecedented replacement of one myth to another, but also requires individuals to surrender their lives of convience and abundance with a focus on individual self-importance.
