Presentation abstract

In his Of Other Spaces, Michel Foucault observes that “we are in the epoch of simultaneity”. Whether to visualize time or space, this idea presupposes a virtual world in which subjectivities undergo a process of transformation toward “becoming other”, as Deleuze and Guattari describe it. This paper will explore alternative worlds which are at the heart of speculative fiction, and which plays a major part in deconstructing the notion of gender as an indispensable element of identity. In the light of Foucault’s comment and Deleuze and Guattari’s idea of “becoming-other”, illustrated by a selection of literary texts, I will show how speculative fiction negotiate an alternative space which interrupts the socially constructed domination of the body and consequently opens a space in which new subjectivities can emerge.
