Presentation abstract

In this era of globalisation and mass urbanization, cities in India are transforming, evolving and mutating like an organic entity where temporality and informality have become significant urban characteristics. As such, Indian cities can no longer be perceived as a static entity; rather, they are morphing into urban spaces which are more fluid and malleable. This particular ‘Kinetic’ aspect of cities, lends them a temporal character, often visible through the Urban festivals celebrated in their Urban Fabric. These festivals which appear only for some fleeting time in the urban landscape, however, holds the power to transform the everyday spaces into spaces of social interaction, lending a unique identity to the city and their presence in the everyday landscape weaves itself through the urban fabric dominating the popular visual culture. As cities resort more and more towards the tangible and intangible cultural heritage to rebuild and redefine their identity, new vocabularies of celebration veering towards what can be broadly termed as ‘festivalisation’ of the city have emerged. This can provide a window to understand how the urban fabric metamorphoses with time and context. The central concern of this paper is to develop a critical eye towards urban spectacles in the backdrop of cultural homogenization. It further analyses how urban festivals reinterpret their symbolic meanings through various inter and intra cultural interactions over time. While urban spectacles have often been criticized for influencing the public realm for political, cultural or economic gain in the face of globalisation of culture, they can also play an important role in urban regeneration. This paper will address how urban festivals can facilitate the urban social space through social interactions and stimulate local identity by participant observation of visitor behaviour and festival spaces of various festivals in Guwahati, India.
