Presentation abstract

“It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.” – Patrick Rothfuss Exploring the questions of image and identity often lead us to carefully distinguish facts from fiction. Who can but deny the impact of narratives in our lives? From unconsciously internalizing messages from others’ realities to consciously embracing beliefs shaped by mythological and cultural archetypes; from building elaborate, personal narratives based on life experiences to interacting with the vast array of multi-sensory cues all around us, the relentless quest for validation often defines every kind of human endeavor. Our experience of self-satisfaction predominantly relies on the cohesion, or lack of it, between internal validation and external validation.  In a world increasingly engaged with consumption, with screens having come to assume an irrefutable place in our lives, visual communication has gained enormous momentum in the past few years. Image and appearance pressures have not only deepened, but their impact on self-esteem and body-image cannot be more prominent than now, where humans are witnessing visible tension between the ability to convey a carefully constructed self-image AND the indisputable need to own the body as it is. This research is aimed at examining the critical influences on body-image, from the feminine perspective. How perceptions can shape image, how powerful an image really is, what impact do gender roles have on image, and how the body is an extension of the ‘self’ are some of the objectives of this study. As Davis suggests that ‘dress serves as a visual metaphor for identity’, we must therefore ponder the ability of the ‘self’ to observe and express itself through its appearance to derive greater meaning for its ever evolving narrative.
