Presentation abstract
The present paper is an attempt to introduce the sociological, philosophical, ethical, metaphysical and aesthetic significance of the sacred visual image Aum of Hindu culture. For this purpose, I will be using Power point presentation to analyse and depict the deeper meaning of the image AUM. Although AUM symbolises the most profound concepts of Hindu belief, it stands as a symbol of affirmation, peace, and benediction, just and virtuous life. It is used ritualistically in prayers, invocations and ceremonies, both religious as well as secular. This symbol is enshrined in every Hindu temple, monasteries and is also used universally in every Hindu way of life. It stands as an injunction, a command, the “ought” and the categorical imperative which impels men to draw the image AUM ॐ at the beginning of every auspicious Hindu rituals. The Vedas and the Upanishads which are the principal philosophical treatises have described AUM as a sound symbol. The syllable AUM is the inmost essence of all essences. It is supreme because of its being the symbol of the supreme Self. All speech is interwoven on this symbol AUM, in the same manner as the leaves of a tree are woven together on a stalk. The Upanishads declare that: “One who has known Aum which is soundless and of infinite sounds and which is ever-peaceful on account of negation of duality is the real sage and none other”. The goal which all the Vedas declare, which all austerities aim at, and which men desire when they lead the life of continence... is AUM. Meditation on Aum is an experiential technique for uncovering the true essence of the Self, the direct understanding that the seeker is the Self. The Upanishads proclaim that “Aum is indeed the Self/Brahman”.
