Polyandry is a form of polygamy in which a woman has more than one husband.  This paper spans within its ambit the visual dimension of polyandry, a quaint and dying form of matrimony still practiced in some areas of Himachal Pradesh in India. The oldest allegory pertaining to polyandry is from the marriage of Draupadi to the Pandavas in the epic Mahabharata. The present day polyandry however is more a function of resource conservation in a harsh environment. It is most commonly found in the non-ecumene areas of the Himalayas, where resources are so scarce that division of farm land would actually render agriculture unsustainable. This paper will use documentary and images to depict mythological and real life polyandrous unions. The polyandrous family is usually patrilocal and patrilineal and all chores and duties are shared by everyone in the family. Sharing a common wife also has its complications and conjugal rights of the brothers are maintained with mutual cooperation. It is also pertinent to point out that women in polyandrous set up have a considerable social esteem as not only do they contribute economically but are also allowed greater latitude and participation in decision making. Although only symbolic, polyandry in Kinnaur does have a ritual depicting bride capture - the oldest form of matrimony. However, the migration of people from subsistence farming to other jobs and the advent of modern education and media has caused this archaic practice to steeply decline and it may even be extinct in a few decades. It is perhaps the most curious and rare extant matrimonial practice and therefore has received considerable attention from sociologists and social anthropologists.
