Presentation abstract

India has rich traditional and cultural heritage, which is reflected by the myriad of crafts prevailing in different parts. Hand embroidery has been of a special significance in Indian society since long as it was used to fill life with colours and celebrate togetherness. Embroideries were also used to add value and beautify the otherwise unusable materials. Kantha is one such embroidery which was used to stitch together the unusable cotton sarees and old cotton clothes to make light blanket, throw and bedspreads, especially for the children. The motifs used were the folklores, forests, animals , birds As with other crafts, modernization has significantly affected the techniques, patterns and usage of the Kantha embroidery which is now also used on expensive material like silk. It is now also sold and worn as a piece of art by the higher class of the society. This study traces the evolution of Kantha in Indian society through extensive review of literature to map the changes in the motifs, colours, materials and usage of Kantha embroideries. The study also attempts to explore the changes of the modern society which may have triggered to the evolution of Kantha.
