Presentation abstract

This poster focuses on how the Black Twitter community, its youth, in particular, exhibit their prowess in their fluency of African American culture as a means of displaying their ethnicity online. It analyzes how prosody and paralanguage, an integral aspect of person to person communication in the Black Community, is made manifest on Black Twitter utilizing emojis, memes, and animated gifs. Also, how pop culture and current events are transposed onto African American Vernacular English syntax revolutionizing the long-standing cultural heritage of narrating the African American experience on Black Twitter to celebrate their cultural heritage, to advocate and show solidarity toward their community.
