Presentation abstract
This work presents a critical study of José Ricardo Morales’ theatre aiming at revitalising his theatre in the context of education, involving the teaching-learning process to both encourage interdisciplinary classes in the courses of Language, Literature and History, and stimulate students’ critical thinking in Chilean secondary education. Morales (1915-2016) was a Spanish-Chilean playwright and writer on both sides of the Atlantic who established the Humanistic Theatre and, consequently, contributed to the professionalisation of the theatre in Chile. In this regard, Morales launched his avant-garde aesthetical theatre challenging the local literary canons in Chile, in which he anticipated the several problems we are now facing in society, such as the issues of totalitarianism, globalisation, and technology dependency. This study will provide several Learning Goals from the Curricular Bases corresponding to the Chilean secondary education, in line with the concepts of communication, power and technology developed in his theatre. It will trace the following objective: Identify the impact of Morales’ theatre in education regarding its incorporation into the General Training Plan and the Humanistic-Scientific Differentiated Plan of the National Education Curriculum for secondary education. By doing so, It will focus on the Study Program from the Ministry of Education of Chile for the courses Language and Communication, Language and Literature and History, Geography and Social Sciences. Indeed, this critical study will intend to reveal how the fundamental concepts of communication, power and technology developed in José Ricardo Morales’ plays can influence on the participants both in the academic debate and the teaching-learning process in secondary education. In particular, It will highlight Morales’ capacity for communicating current societal problems affecting society. Therefore, what is important is to incorporate Morales’ plays into the education field as he has little scholarly attention both in the Chilean literary and theatre scene and the educational sphere.
