Presentation abstract

Studies of immigration have examined how individual behaviors are influenced by interactions with people and institutions in the immigrant context. These studies have done important work to illustrate how key concepts in the study of culture and development, including ‘cultural models’ (d’Andrade: 1992) and ‘typologies of incorporation’ (Ogbu 1987), as well as ‘ecological systems’ (Bronfenbrenner 1979) and ‘cultural mediation’ (based on the ideas of Vigostsky 1978), are enacted in the daily lives of immigrant communities. The aim of this review is to elucidate how Latin American Culture is not itself responsible for the negative outcomes of the Latino population and the influence that the context has on the Latino population. This review presents some highlights of the strengths of the Latin American Culture itself and raises the following field. How familismo endeavor Latino Children social and cognitive development? How hilarity is used in Latino families as an auto-defense mode? What are the good practices of Caring Motherhood? How parents influence on young-adult expectations? To preserve the Mother language is a strength for Latinos Children? How do Latino Children formulate their identity in conjunction with social practices at home and develop the cognitive and social assets that they bring to school? Moreover, this review offers some recommendations and future research.
