Presentation abstract

In the Fall semester of 2020 professors Sebastian Concha from UNIMINUTO and Emily Feuerherm from the University of Michigan taught online for the first time. But that wasn’t the only first for them: It was also the first time they participated in a virtual exchange, the first time they offered an online student-teaching experience, and the first time they had an online service learning project. All of this was wrapped into a single project where they also presented the experience in a virtual professional conference in TESOL. talking about a big learning experience and a massive challenge! Now that it is all over they can confidently say that they would do it all over again bearing in mind, of course, that this was their first experience and there is room for improvement. This virtual exchange combined UM-Flint’s TEL410 TESOL Seminar and Practicum with the Social Responsibility Practicum and the subject Formative Practicum for future English language educators enrolled in the BA in Foreign Languages at Corporacion Universitaria Minuto de Dios (UNIMINUTO). These courses prepare students to teach English as a second or foreign language. They require students to practice what they have learned by student-teaching. This virtual exchange was a great match because both programs typically have students teach as a service to the community.
